The Town Lázně Bělohrad
The little town that is home to Lázně Bělohrad a.s. nestles in the picturesque landscape of the Krkonoše foothills. This much sought-after spa is surrounded by the Bažantnice natural park, with a sports complex and tennis courts. Lázně Bělohrad a.s. has a tradition of one hundred and twenty years of spa treatment, and its benefits to health have been praised by many generations of guests.
A great many famous figures have had connections with Lázně Bělohrad, such as the writer and poet Karel Václav Rais, the composer and conductor Karel Moor, and the writers Karel Jaromír Erben, Leontina Mašínová, Eliška Krásnohorská, Emil Vachek and Bohumil Hrabal. The actor Oldřich Nový enjoyed stopping here, and hid his daughter from the Germans in the town during the war. The actors Otomar Krejča, Josef Bek, Jiří Wimmer and the artists Max Švabinský also used to visit.
Guests who have difficulty walking longer distances can be taken into the town centre on the spa bus. When walking around the centre of the town you can visit the memorial to the local native Karel Václav Rais, and look around the 18th century baroque chateau or the baroque Church of All Saints from the 17th century. There is also a museum here, established at the instigation of the renowned paleontologist, geologist and professor of zoology at Charles University, Dr. Antonín Frič, who was treated in the spas here and visited Bělohrad often. There are displays of natural curiosities and homeland exhibitions.
In 1939 Professor Cmunt wrote this about Lázně Bělohrad: "Lázně Bělohrad has an old and excellent curative tradition. Firstly there is the wonderful peat, some of the best in Bohemia. It is as hot as in Piešťany, the difference being that the coolness of the vast tracts of woodland is within reach. I sincerely invite all of you who don’t yet know Bělohrad to pay a visit."
Here, away from the bustle of the city and surrounded by beautiful countryside, you can relax, get well and recover your strength, while seeing something of the lovely scenery nearby. The local countryside has its own magic.
